This is a question we get asked on a regular basis, especially during the build up to key events like Mother’s Day. Looking back at key data from May we’ve found some great insights to answer the question of what plant gift to select.
At a high level, 61% of orders were for outdoor plants and 39% were for indoor plants. May was a very mild month, so it was perfect for getting outdoors into the garden.
Looking deeper through the data we were able to rank the top 5 plants as follows:
- First place went to the Gardenia, which is highly scented with white flowers making it the ideal Mother’s Day gift. It was the most popular plant gift by far, making up 18.8% of all consumer gifts.
- Second place went to the Meyer Lemon Tree. This surprised us at first until you think about how great a gift it is. This made up 13% of all gifting orders and signifies a lot of juice in years to come.
- Third place went to the Anthurium, the first indoor plant on our list. With it’s red heart shaped flowers, it is the perfect symbolic plant to gift.
- Fourth place went to Jasmine, again highly scented with white flowers. These are easy care climbers.
- Rounding out the top five was the Phalaenopsis Orchid, the second most popular indoor plant, again with white flowers and a real statement piece.
So, to answer the question “What is the best plant gift?”, the people have voted! Out of 23 plant gifts available the real winner was the Gardenia. It is also interesting to see that 40% of customers sent gifts with white flowers and 57% gifted plants that produce flowers.
We will continue to monitor and provide meaningful data to support your gift buying with confidence. It will be interesting to see the change in product mix for different occasions and also the difference the weather or season makes to purchasing habits. At the end of the day, any plant will be appreciated when it arrives, but always great to know what is popular. Congratulations Gardenia!
