Kowhai Shrub - Native NZ plant
Sometimes referred to as the national flower of New Zealand, Kowhai is the Maori word for 'yellow', which refers to its bright yellow flowers that are so popular with many nectar-loving native birds such as Tui and Kereru (wood pigeon). Medicinal use of Kowhai has long been known to Maori. Of the three species of New Zealand Kowhai , ‘Dragon’s Gold’ is the smaller growing variety which was discovered on Stephens Island in the Cook Strait.
