Sometimes referred to as the national flower of New Zealand, Kowhai is the Maori word for 'yellow', which refers to its bright yellow flowers that are so popular with many nectar-loving native birds such as Tui and Kereru (wood pigeon). Medicinal use of Kowhai has long been known to Maori. Of the three species of New Zealand Kowhai , ‘Dragon’s Gold’ is the smaller growing variety which was discovered on Stephens Island in the Cook Strait.

This plant comes in gift box and includes a gift card personalised with your message.

Is a Kowhai Shrub easy to care for? Yes! Kowhai shrubs are generally easy to care for. They are hard, adaptable, and well suited to conditions in New Zealand. With the right planting location and minimal care, they grow well in NZ gardens and make a great long term gift.
How much light does a Kowhai Shrub need? Kowhai grows best when in full sun or slightly partial shade. Full sun encourages growth and flowering. While it can tolerate some shade, if light levels are too low flowering will be reduced.
Is a Kowhai Shrub safe for pets? Parts of Kowhai can be toxic but only if chewed or ingested. Try and plant away from pets or livestock if planted outside.
Does a Kowhai Shrub need warmth/humidity? Kowhai are very tolerant of a wide range of New Zealand climates. They do not require any special conditions to grow well outdoors. If planted outside, protect young plants from frost while they establish.
How often should I water a Kowhai Shrub? Kowhai shrubs prefer regular watering while they are growing, but once established, they are relatively tolerant to drought.
Planting & Care Advice Prefers sun and must be planted in free draining but moist soil.
