Why It's A Great Gift
Glossy, jade-green leaves on a charming miniature tree
The Money Tree Jade Plant is a classic symbol of prosperity and good luck, with thick, glossy, jade-green leaves set in neat pairs along sturdy branches. In bright light, the leaf edges often blush red, and over the years its stems thicken into a charming, tree-like trunk.
It suits a sunny windowsill, desk or shelf, and needs very little water, making it one of the easiest plants to keep. A meaningful gift for a new business, a new home, a graduation or anyone who could use a little extra luck.
Care at a glance
Lucky, long-lived and low fuss
Plenty of light, gritty, free-draining mix and a light hand with watering help this succulent thrive. Here is what it needs.
-
Light
Bright indirect light
Loves a bright, sunny window, and enjoys a few hours of direct sun each day. In low light, it becomes leggy and may drop leaves.
-
Water
When dry to touch
It stores water in its leaves and stems, so let the mix dry out between drinks, then water thoroughly and let it drain. Water much less in winter.
-
Climate
Frost tender
Keep indoors in a bright, warm room, ideally 18 - 24°C. Protect it from frost and cold draughts.
-
Soil
Potting mix
A gritty, free-draining cactus and succulent mix and a pot with drainage holes help prevent rot.
-
Size
Around 60cm - 1.2m tall indoors
A slow grower, adding around 5–10cm a year. Prune in spring to keep it compact and encourage a bushier, tree-like shape.
-
Pets
Toxic to pets
Jade plants are toxic to cats and dogs, and chewing can cause vomiting and lethargy. Keep it out of reach of pets.
Crassula ovata, the jade plant, named from the Latin for its thick stems and egg-shaped leaves.
Origins
The jade plant comes from the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa, and Mozambique, where it grows on dry, rocky hillsides under bright sun. Crassula means ‘thick’, referring to its fleshy stems, while ovata refers to its oval leaves.
Known around the world as the money tree, lucky plant or friendship tree, it can live for decades. A mature plant may even reward you with clusters of small, starry white or pale pink flowers in winter.
Questions
Something else? Get in touch, we're happy to help.
Is a Money Tree Plant Gift easy to care for?
Yes. It is one of the easiest plants to grow, as long as it gets plenty of light and is not overwatered. Overwatering is the most common cause of problems.
How much light does a Money Tree Plant Gift need?
Bright light is best, with a few hours of direct sun each day. More sun brings more compact growth and red-tinged leaf edges. If moving it into stronger sun, do it gradually to avoid scorching.
How often should I water a Money Tree Plant Gift?
Water when the mix is dry, roughly every two weeks in spring and summer and every three to four weeks in winter. Water thoroughly, then empty the saucer. Wrinkled leaves mean it is thirsty, while soft, yellowing leaves usually mean too much water.
Does a Money Tree Plant Gift need warmth/humidity?
Yes. It is happy at normal room temperatures, ideally around 18 - 24°C, and should be kept above 7°C. It copes well with dry indoor air and needs no extra humidity.
Is a Money Tree Plant Gift safe for pets?
No. Jade plants are listed as toxic to cats and dogs, and chewing can cause vomiting and lethargy. Keep it out of reach of pets.
